International Support for Outsourced Marriott Renaissance Seoul Workers

The union of outsourced workers at the Seoul Marriott Renaissance hotel is receiving growing international support as members continue with their daily picket at the hotel. The workers are demanding reinstatement as direct employees of the hotel, which outsourced their work to a fake "independent" cleaning services company in an operation which the government has ruled was illegal, but has refused to take action against (click here for background).

Ok-soon Cheong, the IUF's Liaison Officer in Korea, returned to Seoul with a banner inscribed with union solidarity messages from delegates representing 45 unions at the IUF's Asia/Pacific Regional Conference, held in Bali, Indonesia from October 10-12. (The conference also adopted a strong resolution condemning the Korean government's savage repression of the Government Employees' Union).



On October 11, John Ryall, National Secretary of the New Zealand Service and Food Workers' Union (SFWU), took part in a delegation from the national center which met with the Korean Ambassador to New Zealand to protest the ongoing repression against trade unions in Korea. The SFWU specifically demanded government action on the Marriott Renaissance case. The Renaissance workers, now approaching 300 days on the picket line, have also been visited by a representative of the UK union Unison, who walked the picket line with them.
